The Break: Who is Tim Van Rijthoven?

While everyone else is slugging it out at Wimbledon for no points, ATP world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev has apparently been getting a head start on his hard-court season—and he’s caught the eye of Bayern Munich in the process.

The Russian was spotted on the practice courts showing off his football-tennis skills, as a video of his step overs and keepie uppies with a tennis ball was posted to his agent Olivier van Lindonk’s social media account.

The lifelong soccer fan’s skills even caught the eye of his favorite team Bayern Munich, who gave him a five-star review:

As a Russian player, Medvedev was banned from competing at Wimbledon and tournaments in Britain, along with his countrymen and Belarusian players. He still had a grass-court season to remember, reaching back-to-back finals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Halle.

But he just couldn’t stay off the lawns for long: Medvedev spent part of his post-grass season break hitting the links with friend Bastian Schweinsteiger. Apparently, Medvedev’s skills on the golf course were nothing to write home about, but that’s probably because his true passion has always been on the football pitch.

Medvedev is a longtime fan of Bayern Munich—which happens to be Schweinsteiger’s old team—and it’s a passion that goes all the way back to his childhood.

“I really fell in love with soccer and with Bayern when I was maybe 12 years old,” he said in an interview last year. “That’s when it really started. But even before that, when I was 6 years old, I remember that I already liked Bayern…

“When I was in school and at university, I watched absolutely everything,” he added. “I watched every match of Bayern, I watched every friendly, I even watched practice sessions when there was a possibility. I became a huge fan.”
