Desert rain washes out top names: Pliskova, Rublev, Gauff get swept out of Indian Wells 

The final week in Tennis Paradise didn't start with the typical sunshine and dry desert heat at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. However, in the morning hours the sun was out but by early afternoon an intense 40 MPH win swept over the desert bringing stormy weather along with it by the evening.

The windy conditions saw a handful of top names severely struggle on the court. Everything from hitting bad ball tosses to shanking groundstrokes due to the swirling winds played a major factor in Monday's matches.

No. 1 seed Karolina Pliskova gave up 42 unforced errors and struggled to do anything with her usual tough as nails serve— hitting 12 double faults in her straight-set loss to qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia. The match marked the Brazlian's first time in over two years she competed against a Top 70 player.

Pliskova was far from the only top player to go down.

Also during the windy day session, Danielle Collins could not catch a break as she quickly fell to Ons Jabeur 6-1, 6-3. Jabeur's craftiness paired with the unpredictable weather made for a frustrating day at the office for Collins, who previously took out the Tunisian in a three-set battle at Roland Garros in 2020.

The night session was a continuation of poor weather conditions, developing into not just wind but pouring rain and even some lightning. No. 15 seed Coco Gauff struggled to find any type of rhythm in the stop-and-go affair against Paula Badosa. The Spaniard notched a, 6-2, 6-2, win over the American on Stadium 1 and was able to remain locked in despite having to stop play at 5-2 in the first set due to the storm.

On the men's side, American Tommy Paul captured his second Top 10 win of his career by taking out Andrey Rublev. It was gorgeous forehand after gorgeous forehand all night for the 24-year-old. With a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory he secured the biggest win of his career in front of a crowd heavily favoring him.

As of now, it looks like no storms are in the seven-day forecast and it will be back to business as usual in the California desert.
