Frances Tiafoe meets Maryland Governor Wes Moore amid career-best stretch

The DMV native became the first African American to reach the US Open semifinals since Arthur Ashe last summer, and is currently at a career-high ranking of No. 15.

Frances Tiafoe took a trip to the Maryland State House over the weekend, meeting newly-elected Maryland Governor Wes Moore following his 2023 Australian Open campaign.

“I can’t wait to see all the great things to come for our state with you behind us,” Tiafoe wrote on Instagram. “Wish nothing but the best for you and appreciate all the love Maryland. I love y’all with everything.”

Born in Hyattsville, Maryland, Tiafoe is one of the DMV area’s favorite sons and is in the midst of a career surge at 25 years old, reaching his first Grand Slam semifinal last summer at the US Open and becoming the first African American to do so in Flushing Meadows since Arthur Ashe.

Tiafoe continued that momentum in 2023, going undefeated at the inaugural United Cup and made a flashy fashionable display in Melbourne, where he reached the third round and lost a narrow four-setter to eventual semifinalist Karen Khachanov.

Meeting Governor Moore with his family, Tiafoe was presented with a citation from the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates.
