The WTA season came to its official end last Wednesday, and the women wasted little time ditching their racquets for a long overdue vacation—for many, it was quite possibly their first since the onset of the global pandemic in 2020.

The Maldives has become the go-to spot for the game’s best, including Paula Badosa and Donna Vekic:

Vekic ended a frustrating season, one blighted by a knee injury and subsequent surgery, on the highest possible note when she captured her third career title in Courmayeur.

“I think it would be a mix of traveling and unwinding,” she said when asked to describe her perfect off-season. “I definitely use the time to see people I can’t usually meet when I’m traveling to tournaments, I’ll spend time with family. It’s just great to spend time in one place.”

Badosa can be equally proud with how she ended her breakthrough 2021, winning her first WTA 1000 title at the BNP Paribas Open to guarantee a berth at the AKRON WTA Finals Guadalajara. In her first foray among the Elite Eight, she won her round-robin group with victories over Aryna Sabalanka and Maria Sakkari before bowing out to countrywoman and eventual champion Garbiñe Muguruza.

“I won't have much time because I know in one month I have to be almost in Australia. I'll be resting mentally, but not physically,” she said of her off-season.

True to her word, has been sharing workouts on her Instagram stories.

Speaking of Muguruza, the WTA Finals champion zagged from the Maldives to opt for a stay in St. Martin, continuing a celebration that began with her victory in Mexico.

“We're going to have some tequila, have fun, lose all the tension we've been having and holding,” she said after overcoming Anett Kontaveit in the final. “I think the whole team deserves it.”

For her part Kontaveit decided to stay closer to home to start her off-season, returning to Talinn to reunite with her plants and some furry friends after a wildly (and successfully) busy two months saw her win three titles and finish runner-up at the WTA Finals.

“It almost feels like I've been playing for three years non-stop,” joked the Estonian in Guadalajara. “Definitely after this, I'm two hands ready for a holiday.”
