NEW YORKFear not, tennis fans: we haven’t seen the last of Petra Kvitova’s explosive forehandnor have we heard the last of her signature “Pojd!” celebration.

The two-time Wimbledon champion was in good spirits despite a straight-sets defeat to Jessica Pegula at the US Open on Monday, feeling there were plenty of positives to take from a swing that saw her not only reach a first WTA 1000 final since before the global pandemic, but also reach her first Grand Slam second week of a major tournament since 2020 Roland Garros.

“Not only here, but in Cincinnati, I think I played a very good game,” she said after bowing out to the No. 8 seed, 6-3, 6-2 under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof. “Here, beating Garbiñe from two match points down was a big fight.

“Of course, I lost today, but overall, it was really probably two really very good weeks in my season. Eastbourne was the best one, so I’m pleased with that.”

Kvitova endured a brutal start to her 2022 season, the Czech compiled a 6-7 record through her first seven weeks on tour and made a first-round exit from the Australian Open for a second straight seasonleading some to question how much longer the 32-year-old might continue on tour.

But as it has been the case in years past, Kvitova came back to life on grass, winning her 29th career title in Eastbourne ahead of a solid return to Wimbledon, where she took a narrow loss to No. 4 seed Paula Badosa in the third round. Her hard-court season was even stronger, featuring a runner-up finish in Cincinnati in addition to her fourth-round run in Flushing Meadows.

“I’m still here, playing tennis, getting ready same as before,” she said cryptically “So, I don’t think this changes in a good or bad way.”

Asked explicitly if fans could expect to see her at the US Open next year, Kvitova smiled.

“Ah, that’s the question. Interesting, you should ask normally then,” she said with an endearing twang before answering rather definitively. “I’m not planning to stop.”

Kvitova, who recently announced her engagement to longtime coach Jiri Vanek, will return home before announcing her fall schedule, which could include appearances at new tour stops in North America before the calendar culminates at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas.
