It’s no secret that Spanish players typically have a high degree of resilience and fight on the tennis court, but the grit displayed by Alexander Davidovich Fokina and Paula Badosa was on another level.

Friday’s five-set rollercoaster between Casper Ruud and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was the match of the day on the men’s side.

Despite losing 15 more points and six more games than the Norwegian, Davidovich Fokina somehow escaped with a miraculous 7-6 (3), 2-6, 7-6 (6), 0-6, 7-5 victory. The Spaniard chose to be the aggressor in the match’s biggest moments and was rewarded.

He even pulled out an underhand serve down break point at 6-5 in the fifth set.

It was a massive win for the Spaniard as Ruud is easily one of the 10 best clay-court players in men’s tennis. It was Davidovich Fokina’s second consecutive five-set victory. He’s bound to be exhausted, but the 21-year-old will try his luck against Federico Delbonis for a spot in the quarterfinals.

In the Badosa (Gibert) vs. Ana Bogdan marathon, the Spaniard survived a redlining Bogdan, narrowly advancing with a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory. Bogdan’s backhand was on fire, yet Badosa never wavered. The Spaniard will face off against Marketa Vondrousova in the fourth round.
