Carla Suárez Navarro brought some happy news to tennis fans’ timelines on Tuesday when she announced that she and partner, professional footballer Olga Garcia, were expecting a child in June of next year.

“Let’s grow the family,” exclaims the former world No. 6 in an Instagram post. “Excited and happy to face this big moment. Very soon we will be one more.”

Suárez Navarro was immediately inundated with well-wishes from the tennis world, including from countrywomen Garbiñe Muguruza and Paula Badosa, who wrote her congratulations on the growing family.

A seven-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, Suárez Navarro became a fan favorite over the decade she spent in the upper echelons of the women’s game, winning two WTA titles and reaching the 2014 Roland Garros doubles semifinals with Muguruza.

She had planned to make 2020 her final season on tour, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed her plans and a Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosed threatened to derail them entirely.

Suárez Navarro was in remission by spring of the following year and conducted an emotional farewell tour that culminated with one last appearance at the Billie Jean King Cup last November.

Her official retirement ceremony was held in May at the Mutua Madrid Open, where she twice reached the quarterfinals.
