Roger Federer teams up with Duchess Kate for day of tennis and charity

Talk about a mixed doubles team for the ages. Roger Federer is set to make his long-awaited return to the tennis courts later this year, and it looks like he’ll be joined by a royal partner for the Laver Cup in London.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion announced on social media that he, on behalf of Laver Cup, and the Duchess of Cambridge will be teaming up for a day of tennis and charitable giving this September.

It will all be for the benefit of two organizations, both patronized by The Duchess herself: Action for Children, which supports vulnerable children and families across the UK, and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), whose charitable arm is the LTA Tennis Foundation, whose focus is to grow youth tennis participation nationwide.

In addition, all proceeds from Laver Cup’s Open Practice Day, which is set for September 22 at The O2, will be split between the two charities.

“The Laver Cup is committed to supporting community initiatives impacting young people in each city it visits and the collaboration with Action for Children and the LTA was initiated by a recommendation from The Duchess,” said event organizers, via a statement.

“Her Royal Highness is passionate about supporting grassroots tennis and encouraging young people from all backgrounds to become involved in the sport,” the Kensington Palace said in a press release.

Duchess Kate is, of course, no stranger to the tennis courts in London and beyond: she’s a patron of the All England Club, too, and has regularly been on hand at Wimbledon to present trophies to the finalists. And when Emma Raducanu became a national hero overnight after her surprise US Open victory, the Duchess helped to lead the celebrations for her massive homecoming party.

Kate is also a big Federer fan and family friend, too—remember when the Swiss great gave her son, Prince George, tennis lessons at the Cambridge’s home back in 2019?

This year, Federer will be joining his ‘Big Three’ rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on Team Europe during his Laver Cup return, along with Andy Murray, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Casper Ruud. They’ll be taking on a Team world that features the likes of Taylor Fritz, Jack Sock, Diego Schwartzman and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
