Not only was Karolina Pliskova down 7-5, 2-3 to Katarina Zavatska when the match was suspended on Tuesday night due to rain, but shortly after they resumed play on Wednesday, Zavatska even served for the match at 7-5, 5-4—but Pliskova kept clawing back and eventually emerged with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 victory over the tenacious Ukrainian after two hours and 48 minutes on court.

And it was a sentimental victory in two ways:

~ It was Pliskova’s first win of 2022 (she missed the first two months of the season with a right hand injury, including pulling out of the Australian Open, and then fell in her opening matches at both Indian Wells and Miami)

~ It was the 350th tour-level win of Pliskova’s career (she’s now 350-183 overall, which includes 66-41 on clay, 241-122 on hard courts and 43-20 on grass)

“It was a great fight. She played really well,” Pliskova said afterwards.

“I’m just really happy to be back here.”

The 2016 US Open and 2021 Wimbledon finalist will play either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Zheng Qinwen on Thursday for a spot in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 event.
