MATCH POINT: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina bests Gael Monfils in Hamburg straight-set showdown

WASHINGTON, DC—Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is still buzzing from his June 14 wedding to Paloma Amatiste, he’d be down to celebrate a second time.

“After the ceremony, everything went by so quickly,” he told me at the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Wednesday, adding with a laugh. “My wife and I want to do another wedding because it went so quick! But it costs a lot of money, so I don’t think we’ll do another one.”

The nuptials themselves were a blur for the world No. 26, who eased through his first match at the DC Open against Juame Munar in straight sets.

“At the beginning of the ceremony, I was so nervous,” he said. “I was relaxed until about two hours before the wedding. I did have some stress because I wanted everything to go good, and I kept looking to my wife to see if she was ok or if she needed my help with anything.

“It was a lot of work. I mean, she put more work in, but I was in the shadows!”

The wedding was the culmination of a 18-month engagement that kicked off in Rome last January. Fokina surprised Amatiste by popping the question after tossing a coin into the iconic Trevi Fountain.

From there, Amatiste took charge of the planning once the pair settled on the Trocadero Sotogrande, a beach club restaurant, as their venue.

“It was a special place because our first date was at a Trocadero restaurant and we knew that the franchise had a very nice location on the beach,” said Davidovich Fokina. “That’s where we had the wedding, and it was such a beautiful place. We wanted to have it on the beach, and near to Marbella.”

The pair wrote vows that were recited by the officiant.

“They were tough words to say and I didn’t think I could make it through without getting emotional!”

Getting married between Roland Garros and Wimbledon, Davidovich Fokina had Arthur Fils serve as a witness for the ceremony and the aforementioned unforgettable party.

“It was amazing. A lot of people were drunk!” laughed the 26-year-old Spaniard. “We were enjoying every moment. You do one of these per life, and you have to enjoy the day.”

With time to celebrate again in the off-season, Davidovich Fokina is back to business at the DC Open, and will next play top seed Taylor Fritz or Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the quarterfinals.
