Parks went on to win the match, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2, and reach the second WTA quarterfinal of her career at the WTA 250 indoor event.
Her first WTA quarterfinal actually came in the last WTA main draw she played—the WTA 500 indoor event in Ostrava last October.
Between November and December she went on a three-week tear—reaching the semifinals of an $80K ITF event in Spain and then winning back-to-back WTA 125K titles in Andorra and France—that saw her halve her ranking from No. 150 to No. 75. She’s currently ranked No. 79.
Her win over the No. 36-ranked Martic was the fifth Top 50 win of her career, having beaten Zheng Qinwen (No. 46) in Berlin last June, Maria Sakkari (No. 7) and Karolina Pliskova (No. 19) in Ostrava last October and Zhang Shuai (No. 25) at the WTA 125K in France last December.
She’ll face No. 67-ranked Danka Kovinic in the quarters of Lyon on Friday.
