Anastasija Sevastova set for WTA comeback in Andorra

After Caroline Wozniacki made a triumphant comeback this summer, after nearly three years away and two children, and ahead of both Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osaka's own returns from maternity leave in 2024, another new mom is coming back to the WTA Tour.

Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova has been given a wildcard to the WTA 125 event in Andorra, which begins Monday. The former world No. 11 last played at the 2022 Australian Open, and last December, she announced the birth of her first child, daughter Alexandra.

Sevastova had previously announced an indefinite hiatus from tennis after losing to Magda Linette in Melbourne last year as a result of recurring injuries, but in May, she hinted at a potential return by posting a photo of her working out in the gym on Instagram with the caption, "Getting back in shape."

Sevastova was ranked No. 71 at the time of her last match.

It won't be the first time that Sevastova will return to tennis after a prolonged sabbatical.

After playing the tour from 2006-13, she retired for the first time, citing injuries and burnout. She returned with aplomb a little more than two full years later, rebuilding her career from zero, and going on to record some of her biggest career achievements. That included a trip to the 2018 US Open semifinals, and two other quarterfinal berths in New York; three of her four career WTA singles titles; and her career-high ranking, in October of 2018.

Sevastova will face Spain's Irene Burillo Escorihuela in her first-round match, with a possible match against No.4 seed Dayana Yastremska looming in the second round.
