"It must have fire": Aryna Sabalenka helps create limited-edition Wilson Blade racquet

It must have fire.

That was Aryna Sabalenka’s request to Wilson. Back in the spring, the world No. 1 approached her racquet sponsor with the idea of creating her own custom Blade. The cosmetics should be bold and aggressive to reflect her on-court passion and power. And some flames wouldn’t hurt.

Wilson obliged with a fiery mix of color on the frame that channels Sabalenka’s inner warrior. There’s even her signature tiger tattoo emblazoned on the throat. The top seed will play with her limited-edition Blade 98 (16x19) v9 Fighter Edition throughout her run at the US Open.

Sabalenka had recently switched to Evolve—Naomi Osaka’ management company—and was looking for ways to expand on her endorsement deals when she proposed the racquet idea to Wilson. Over the past few years, the brand has created opportunities, whether racquets or apparel, to personalize equipment for their athletes. This also gives Blade users another unique option to add to their collection.

Although Sabalenka technically endorses the Blade 98 (18x20), the Fighter Edition is only offered with the 16x19 string pattern. It’s the more widely used model among players, providing a bit more power and spin. It would be an easier transition for potential adopters inspired by the Sabalenka colorway.

The ninth generation of the hugely popular player’s frame features the new StableFeel technology. It bolsters the racquet’s firmness and resistance to bending and twisting without losing its trademark feel. This gives the racquet even greater control and a more predictable response, giving users more confidence to go for their shots.

Supply of the Blade 98 Fighter Edition ($269) is truly limited. Approximately 100 models were available at the Wilson store on the US Open grounds from 8/25 to 8/27. Additionally, there will be about 1000 models available worldwide on wilson.com and at select tennis retailers.
