Bertens gets wheeled off after Paris win

The Kiki Bertens vs. Sara Errani second round at Roland Garros had it all, and then some. Errani had a match point and had three chances to serve out the marathon match in the third set, but the No. 5 seed held on to win, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 9-7.

Errani, a former finalist in Paris and currently ranked No. 150, had to come through qualifying. As is now the norm for the Italian, she struggled with her serve and needed many toss repeats while sprinkling in a healthy dose of underhand serves.

"Last two years I’ve had many problems [with the serve]", Errani said. "I'm just trying to be there and trying to compete with what I have. There are days where it’s really bad and it's very tough for me so I just try to compete."

She even went underhand on a Bertens match point in the final game, on a second serve.

Bertens had been struggling with cramping in her left quad, which Errani didn't seem to believe.

Upon finishing the match with a remarkable high backhand volley winner, Bertens collapsed to the ground in tears.

A disappointed Errani stormed off without the traditional racquet tap and screamed an expletive in Italian on her way out the door.

"I’m not saying it to her," Errani said. "In Italian you say that when you’re angry, it’s not to her. I am outside the court already and I’m saying what I want."

Meanwhile, when Bertens headed to her chair, the cramps attacked her left quad and her right hand. She needed a wheelchair just to get off the court.

"She played an amazing mach, but I don't like the situation," Errani said. "One hour like she's injured and she runs. I did not like that. She go out of the court on a chair and now she’s in the locker, perfect, and in the restaurant. I don't like these things, I'm sorry."

Bertens will look to recover before she takes on Katerina Siniakova in the third round.
