Dominic Thiem announces Abu Dhabi return in December

The former US Open champion revealed significant improvement to the wrist injury that forced him to end his season.

Dominic Thiem took to social media on Tuesday to announce an earlier-than-expected return to action, revealing he had joined the star-studded roster at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships in December.

“I cannot wait to play my first competitive match in a little over a month,” he wrote in a statement.

Thiem had previously announced he would shut down 2021 season following a Mallorca Open retirement that resulted from an acute wrist injury. Initially optimistic about his prognosis despite withdrawing from Wimbledon, the Austrian was ultimately prevented from making his Olympic debut and defending his maiden major victory in New York.

“I am very happy to announce that my recovery is going well," said Thiem. "The MRI I did today showed my wrist injury has improved significantly.”

The former world No. 3 resumed light practice earlier this month and further revealed that he was fully vaccinated against COVID-19, a prerequisite for participating at the MWTC, an exhibition tournament held in Abu Dhabi.

The event is also set to include Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov, Olympic champion Belinda Bencic, and 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu.
