Five Minutes With… Linda Fruhvirtova: Czech teen describes Gen Z binge-watching habits amid up and down 2023 season

The 18-year-old began the year with a bang by reaching the second week of the Australian Open, and looks to be back in that form with a semifinal run at the Ningbo Open.

Much like her music tastes, Linda Fruhvirtova’s 2023 season has been a little bit of everything. From the highs of reaching her first Grand Slam second week at the Australian Open—where she stunned future Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in three sets—to a 10-match losing streak that took her through an unsatisfying summer, the 18-year-old Czech is still figuring things out in her first full year on the WTA Tour.

The form that long eluded her looks to have returned at the Ningbo Open, where she is into her second career semifinal after knocking out back-to-back seeds in Anna Blinkova and Lucia Bronzetti.

What kind of music are you listening to when you want to pump yourself up before a match?

FRUHVIRTOVA: I listen to everything. It depends on my mood. The playlist changes throughout the year, but I really like to listen to a mix of everything: old hits from the 80s, 90s, a little bit of hip-hop, some pop. It’s really everything.

Flowers by Miley Cyrus is playing everywhere, so I definitely know that one. I love Taylor Swift.

Are you going to see Taylor in concert?

FRUHVIRTOVA: I don’t have tickets to the Eras Tour yet, but maybe one day! I would really like to go.

What was the last concert you went to?

FRUHVIRTOVA: I went to see Harry Styles last summer. It was really cool, and it was actually my first concert that big. I was there with my sister, so we had a great time.

What are some of your favorite accounts to follow on social media?

FRUHVIRTOVA: I love to watch funny videos, the memes on Instagram. I’ll scroll through the reels and watch whatever seems funny to me. I like to send them back and forth to my friends and my sister so we can laugh about them together.

On TikTok, there’s a lot of highlight clips from TV series. I don’t have time to watch the whole show, but I’ll see a lot of great scenes coming up on my For You page.

What series have you been wanting to binge-watch?

FRUHVIRTOVA: I loved watching Suits. I watched that last year from start to finish. On TikTok, I’m seeing a lot of clips from How I Met Your Mother, Friends. These two are popping up for me a lot right now, so I'm watching them a few seconds at a time!
