'Good for the brand': Caroline Wozniacki jokes about Adidas-clad Indian Wells opponents

In her return to the BNP Paribas Open, Caroline Wozniacki has looked vintage in most ways but one. While she was once the featured face of Adidas' Stella McCartney-designed tennis division, the former world No. 1 has found herself wearing the same match kits as her opposition on the court in Tennis Paradise.

Take, for one, her third-round match against American Katie Volynets on Sunday. The 22-year-old from California, 11 years Wozniacki's junior, looked like she could play a stunt double for the 2018 Australian Open champion as she scampered around Stadium 1, showing off defensive skills and down-the-line backhands that rivaled the Dane at her best, all while clad in Adidas' black-and-white spring match kit that Wozniacki herself was also wearing.

But after Wozniacki pulled through a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory to book a spot in the fourth round in her first appearance in five years, she was quick to point out that she and Volynets had not, in fact, committed fashion's biggest faux pas: wearing the same dress to a party.

"Katie was wearing a top and a bottom, a skirt and a top, she wasn't wearing a dress, but it kind of looked like the same," she said. "So even if we're wearing two kind of different outfits, I think we're both going to look pretty much the same out there.

"But I guess it's good for the brand. You get the stuff out there, and I think it's a really cool dress, so I'm going to try and rock it."

Up next for Wozniacki as she seeks the first quarterfinal in her comeback is a 16th career meeting against her fellow former No. 1 and good friend, Angelique Kerber—who's also been wearing the same Adidas kit as she too has rolled back the years, upsetting Petra Martic, Jelena Ostapenko and Veronika Kudermetova.

It's a match that will offer no surprises for either player, in terms of playing style, service patterns—or fashion choices. "I know that Angie is going to rock it too," Wozniacki said.

"We've played each other so much. We know each other extremely well. There's going to be no secrets out there. We both know each other's game inside out. We know what to do, we know what to expect. It's really going to be about who is going to be better on the day. It can go either way," she continued.

"But we'll see who comes out playing better on the day. That's really it. ... It's going to be a great match regardless, and I'm excited for it."
