“A grand finale”: Rafael Nadal & Richard Mille’s latest watch collab hits a new extreme

Rafael Nadal had a lot going on during his brief appearance at Roland Garros, so you’d be forgiven if you missed what the 14-time champion was wearing during his emotional hasta luego at the French Open a fortnight ago.

But even if you spotted Nadal rocking one of the best kits of the tournament in Nike blue, there was a $1.1 million detail on his wrist that has been turning heads too.

Richard Mille, a Swiss luxury watchmaker and Nadal’s longtime sponsor, recently unveiled its latest collaboration with the Spaniard: the stunning RM 27-05 Flying Tourbillon Rafael Nadal. The ultra-luxury piece could be seen during Nadal's first-round match against Alexander Zverev, as well as his address to fans on Court Philippe Chatrier following his 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 defeat.

“My relationship with Richard Mille, the company, as well as Richard as a person, has undoubtedly been a pillar of my sports career since 2010,” Nadal said in a statement. “They have supported me in all circumstances, and I hope that this bond will continue for many more years.

“Richard Mille is not just a simple partner: He has never stopped being by my side, in good times and in difficult ones. Today, after these 14 years, they are part of my family and my life.”

Richard Mille’s “unbreakable friendship” with Nadal has seen the pair launch 11 models in 14 years—including some of the brand’s “most extreme creations.”

In 2010, the Swiss watchmaker put the sports world on notice with the RM 027 Tourbillon, the first in the Nadal series and the player’s first signature watch. A sports watch weighing less than 20 grams, the RM 027 Tourbillon was light enough for Nadal to wear during five-hour Grand Slam finals and robust enough to withstand his powerful groundstrokes—changing what was possible in high-end horology.

Every model since has just upped the ante, combining extreme performance with mechanical beauty to peak with the RM 27-05 Flying Tourbillon. It’s the first Nadal watch to feature a flying tourbillon, a hypnotic piece of engineering that improves a watch’s accuracy.

“With the new 80-piece RM 27-05 Flying Tourbillon Rafael Nadal, this saga of extreme watches culminates in a grand finale: a tourbillon timepiece weighing 11.5 grams without strap and capable of withstanding shocks of over 14,000 g’s—a double record!” Richard Mille shared on social media.

According to the watchmaker, more than 4,000 hours of work went into the design of its flying tourbillon titanium movement and Carbon TPT B.4 case, and the watch features a power reserve of 55 hours.

Limited to just 80 pieces worldwide, the RM 27-05 Flying Tourbillon Rafael Nadal is priced at $1.1 million.
