MIAMI—When life gives you lemons…

Iga Swiatek is making ice cream out of a disappointing decision to withdraw from the Miami Open, trading love for basketball as she checked in from a Miami Heat game on Twitter Thursday night.

“I had great time last night,” tweeted the world No. 1. “Go @MiamiHEAT.”

As the WTA twitter account was quick to point out, Swiatek is making a habit of pairing trips to Miami with Heat games, tweeting pictures from her 2022 encounter with Heat forward and tennis enthusiast Jimmy Butler.

If Miami is hot, Swiatek has been on fire for much of the last 12 months, winning nine titles and two majors since last February. All that tennis, however, has left the Pole feeling a bit run down to start 2023, picking up an illness that, according to Swiatek, triggered coughs so violent as to cause this rib injury.

Swiatek, who began the week by announcing a new clothing deal with On, first discussed the issue following her semifinal exit from the BNP Paribas Open.

“We were kind of checking if this is the kind of injury you can still play with or this is kind when you can get things worse,” she explained at the Hard Rock Stadium following her official withdrawal.

“So, I think the smart move for me is to pull out of this tournament because I want to rest and take care of it properly.”

While Swiatek is temporarily cooling down, the field can rest assured that the 21-year-old will likely be heating up in time for the clay-court swing.
