How it started vs how it’s going…

Jannik Sinner threw it all the way back when shouting out Andreas Seppi in the wake of his countryman’s retirement announcement.

“Congrats on a great career my friend,” wrote Sinner, “You are a great example and we will miss you.”

Sinner and Seppi were both born close to the Italian Alps, and their side-by-side shows a more recent training picture on top of a much earlier encounter—when Sinner was a young(er) kid Seppi was the established Top 50 stalwart, peaking at No. 18 in 2013.

Now 21, student Sinner has surpassed the teacher, making his Top 10 debut in 2021 and reaching three major quarterfinals out of four in 2022.

Seppi is set to play his final tournament at the Orisei Challenger after failing to obtain wild cards in either ATP’s autumn Italian offerings in Florence or Naples. The setback was a disappointment to the 38-year-old, who had appealed directly to the Italian Tennis Federation to no avail.

While he likely looks forward to spending more time with his family and young son, might we see Seppi working alongside Sinner in the future?
