Madrid Open Fashion Roundup: Eight minimalist outfits we can't get enough of

After months of colorful neon looks and brightly-colored outfits, the start of the European clay-court season brings with it a tidal shift in tennis fashion trends.

The Mutua Madrid Open has seen ATP and WTA players hit the court of the Caja Magica with measured elegance in minimalist designs, attention to detail in head-to-toe looks, and unexpected crossovers from the worlds of fashion and sports.

From an Italian’s “gladiator” style to a Grand Slam champion’s “baby doll socks”, here are eight clay-court looks that we can’t get enough from the Madrid Open:

Marta Kostyuk — Wilson

The Ukrainian player scored another style ace on her way to the quarterfinals, this time wearing a navy blue version of Wilson’s Rally Halter Dress. The flat front and split skirt give the dress an elegant silhouette, while the back features a scooped-out racerback for ease of mobility.

Lorenzo Musetti — Asics x A.P.C.

One of the buzziest collabs in fashion between ASICS and Parisian label A.P.C. has hit the tennis world.

The minimalist, monochromatic looks have been spotted on a variety of ASICS players throughout the clay-court season, like Alex de Minaur, Belinda Bencic and Eva Lys. But Lorenzo Musetti’s choice of a flowing sleeveless white crew neck shirt and matching white shorts gives the whole look a gladiator feel that social media couldn’t get enough of.

Matteo Arnaldi — EA7

Matteo Arnaldi scored a stunning upset over Novak Djokovic this week, and he did it in style. The Italian started the season with a new apparel sponsor in EA7, the ‘sporty’ extension of Giorgio Armani, and his stylish burgundy and black stood out from the pack in Madrid.

“Definitely for an Italian brand, even more so Armani that is one of the biggest important brands in Italy, it’s a privilege,” he told Baseline earlier this year.

“They (are) getting into tennis a lot. There are other players (like Fabio Fognini and Lorenzo Sonego), a lot of Italians. For me, it’s a real pleasure and plus outside the court, it's very stylish.”

Lucia Bronzetti — EA7

Like Musetti, Lucia Bronzetti also scored a big win this week and also started the season with a sponsor switch, becoming an ambassador for Emporio Armani back in February.

Bronzetti took the court in Madrid in a watercolor-inspired collared top and skirt featuring lavender, teal and light blue streaks. It's not exactly minimalist, but she certainly turned heads as she took down Naomi Osaka in the first round.

Casper Ruud — Yonex

The Norwegian’s head-to-toe Yonex look got a pink and salmon makeover for the European clay-court season, and it contrasts nicely with the Madrid Open’s vibrant sky blue branding. The shirt and shorts feature a navy blue trim, perfectly matching Ruud’s Eclipsion shoes.

Elina Svitolina — Adidas

Svitolina was dressed for success wearing this Adidas outfit on her way to the title in Rouen. In Madrid, her dreamy lavender separates look took center stage again as the Ukrainian charged past Elena Rybakina and Maria Sakkari on her way to the semifinals.

Coco Gauff — New Balance

Gray has been the signature color for Gauff throughout the clay-court season. In Madrid, she took the court in a slate-colored New Balance outfit featuring a zippered crop top and pleated skirt, as well as a matching pair of ruffled sports socks. Pale yellow provides a pop of color throughout, including on her Coco CG2 shoes.

“Just a girl playing in her baby doll socks, pleated skirt, and muscles strong enough to squat your body weight,” Gauff wrote in one Instagram post.

Tommy Paul — New Balance

Fellow New Balance ambassador Paul was also seen rocking a blue-gray fit in Madrid, with his own twist.

The American paired his signature backwards hat with a performance crew shirt and shorts, completing the look with matching high socks and CT-Rally shoes.
