The partnership between player and racquet is the most important doubles team in tennis, and yet very few fans know how the pros pick sticks.

Leave it to Bethanie Mattek-Sands to demystify the process with the help of Tennis Warehouse as the former doubles No. 1 spends the off-season testing new racquets.

“I’m looking for a little bit of a change,” the American opens of her modified Babolat Aero, which helped her finish runner-up at Roland Garros with Iga Swiatek in 2021. “What I’m looking for is an all-around racquet.

“I don’t want to start choosing favorite children on my strokes, where I feel great on the forehand but I lose my backhand, or great on the serve but lose maneuverability on the volleys. I’m looking for a racquet that feels great on all my shots.”

Unsurprisingly, Mattek-Sands is most keen on racquets that give her the freedom to volley at will.

“If I don’t feel good at the net, the racquet goes to the side automatically.”
