savilles-shapovalovs

There was happy off-court news for two of tennis' player-couples this week: Mirjam Bjorklund and Denis Shapovalov got married, and Daria and Luke Saville are having a baby.

Swede Bjorklund, a former WTA world No. 128, sparked rumors that the two got hitched in the days following the US Open by changing her surname to Shapovalova on social media this week, and their nuptials were revealed officially on Friday with an exclusive spread in Vogue Scandanavia.

The couple, engaged since 2023, recently married in Greece, overlooking the Aegean Sea, with only their closest family and friends in attendance, per the feature story. Their tuxedo-clad pup, Yatzy—whom they adopted earlier this year—stole the show in photos taken by Swedish wedding photographer Karin Lundin.

The pair first got together in 2019.

The same day, in a post from halfway around the world, the Savilles announced that they're expecting their first child next March.

Russian-born Australian Daria Saville had made no secret in recent years of her desire for motherhood, and used her social media channels to chronicle that journey. Candid on social media in telling the behind-the-scenes story of the tennis tour, the now-31-year-old also used her Instagram account to chronicle an egg freezing procedure last November while she was sidelined with injury.

“We’re at that age, both 30 years old and married, and we kind of always said that if we weren’t professional athletes, we would probably try and have kids by now,” she told the *Sydney Morning Herald* in January in an article that also revealed that she was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome in 2019.

"It feels more like, ‘OK, I’ve ticked the box’, and it makes me feel more comfortable continuing my tennis career."

Daria Saville's Instagram channel also played a key role in creatively breaking the news, which was received with a flood of positive comments by the tennis community. In a reel, the couple posed with their dacshund Tofu and an ultrasound picture before sweeping a clay tennis court to reveal the baby's due date of March 26.

"To everyone still dreaming of this moment, we’re thinking of you," she wrote in the caption.

Bianca Andreescu, Ons Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina, Jasmine Paolini and Taylor Townsend were among the high-profile names to congratulate the couple on their soon-to-be new addition.

"This is the news I needed to hear today," added former Australian player Casey Dellacqua.
