Welcome back, B!

Barbora Strycova’s comeback from maternity leave is picking up steam at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia with a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Maryna Zanevska. The former Wimbledon semifinalist got to celebrate her first singles win since 2020 Roland Garros with her No. 1 fan and first-born son, Vincent.

“Máma vyhrála!” exclaimed Strycova in Czech, nudging Vincent to wave to father Petr Matejcek, the Editor-in-Chief for Esquire CZE.

Strycova left the tour in early 2021, announcing her pregnancy in a press conference later that spring but promised a proper farewell tour that began last week at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Reuniting with longtime partner and 2019 co-Wimbledon doubles champion Hsieh Su-Wei, the two reached the quarterfinals at the Caja Magica, and will play again in Rome against Nadiia Kichenok and Kimberly Zimmermann.

In singles, the former world No. 16 will face an in-form Maria Sakkari on Thursday.
