"New look??" Frances Tiafoe wears a Diana Shnaider bandana in Cincinnati

Frances Tiafoe turned heads earlier this week on the Cincinnati Open practice courts, sporting a dark blue polka-dot bandana that looked strikingly similar to WTA player Diana Shnaider’s signature on-court accessory.

Captured by Tennis Channel cameras and shared on social media with the caption “BIG FOE, BIG VIBES,” the look quickly won over fans in the comments. Tiafoe later reposted it to his Instagram Story, writing "New look?? Appreciate u @d_shnaider."

The backstory behind this style crossover? According to Cracked Racquets, Tiafoe had been “asking for months” for one of Shnaider’s bandanas. The two were even photographed in Cincinnati wearing matching styles—Tiafoe in blue, Shnaider in pink.

Shnaider’s attachment to the accessory dates back to her childhood. With fair skin and fine hair, the Russian needed sun protection but disliked caps and visors for blocking her vision. Her mother bought her bandanas and she took to them immediately.

“I had a moment in my teenage years where I was thinking to stop playing in it because I was feeling a bit anxious about people saying weird stuff,” Shnaider told Tennis.com in Cincinnati last year. “(I felt like) all people were looking at me and I didn't feel comfortable. But my parents just made me wear it. Now I'm very pleased that they made me do it.”

Today, she travels with a variety of colors—matching them to her outfits—but says the dark blue version is the “luckiest” banana. That’s the one she gave to Big Foe.

Unfortunately, though, the luck didn’t quite carry over in Cincinnati. On Wednesday, No. 10 seed Tiafoe retired from his fourth-round match against No. 7 Holger Rune with a back injury (6-4, 3-1, ret.) according to a TennisTV broadcast, while Shnaider lost her opener to Yue Yuan on Saturday.

Still, Tiafoe’s hard-court swing has been strong, with the American posting a quarterfinal finish in Washington, D.C., and consecutive fourth-round appearances in Toronto and Cincinnati.

“It’s always nice when you can put a few matches together, and now is the time to get deep in draws,” Tiafoe said earlier in the week. “I feel like it’s going to fall my way now. That’s how I view it. I had a couple matches where I felt like, if a couple of things went differently, it could have went my way, so I’m excited to see what happens.”
