Outfit of the Day: Casper Ruud dons Norwegian blue after “too Danish” Yonex kit causes Olympics controversy

Casper Ruud ended an Olympic incident of international proportions on Monday when he returned to the Summer Olympic Games in an appropriately on-theme ensemble for his second round against Andrea Vavassori.

The former world No. 2 is ordinarily more than happy to see red (clay) on the tennis court, but the suspicious lack of blue on his Team Norway kit raised eyebrows all around as he made his Olympic debut over the weekend.

Described by Norwegian TV presenter Marianne Jemtegård as a “total miss”—or the more hilariously literal “disc boom”—the more Danish-looking red Yonex shirt left Ruud himself confused after his win over Taro Daniel.

“I would have liked to see a little more blue in it myself,” Ruud, seeded sixth in Paris, told Norwegian news outlet NRK.

“It is not me who designed it, and I just put up with what I get. But yes, I missed blue.”

Fellow Yonex athletes Stan Wawrinka and Zizou Bergs, who represents Switzerland and Belgium, respectively, were also wearing "Ruud red" in a trend that earned high marks from Denmark’s own Holger Rune.

Ruud was back on court with way more blue against Vavassori and shook off a slow start to keep the Norwegian flag waving with a three-set win over the Italian, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, booking what will be a Battle of the Blues third-round meeting with Argentine Francisco Cerundolo.
