They say when in Rome, do as the Romans do. For Coco Gauff, competing in the Eternal City means bringing Italian high fashion to the Foro Italico—with a timeless and classic twist.

The 21-year-old took her on-court style game to a whole new level at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, as she unveiled the first pieces from the tennis-inspired collaboration between New Balance and the Milan-based designer label Miu Miu.

“Obviously Miu Miu and New Balance have had a long relationship, and New Balance and I have also had a long relationship. So allowing me to be their muse for this collab is very cool,” she told Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj ahead of the tournament.

“Miu Miu dressed me for the Oscars, so we’re continuing that relationship on court.”

All week long in Rome, the American has been rocking custom apparel and gear from New Balance’s ongoing collaboration with Miu Miu, a buzzy Italian label founded in 1993 by Prada’s head designer Miuccia Prada. Gauff’s look features an elegant dark navy dress with a classic pleated skirt and white contrast trim, while a keyhole opening along the lower back adds ventilation in style. Before and after her matches, the world No. 3 keeps warm with a red silk zip-front hoodie and matching track pants.

On the court, she’s competing in a co-branded version of her signature shoe, the Coco CG2, which has been “re-imagined by New Balance x Miu Miu”. Off the court, Gauff has added the distinctive New Balance x Miu Miu 350 SL to her sneaker roster.

And true to style, the 21-year-old did more than just wear the clothes she was given: Gauff says she took an active role in working with the design teams, from selecting her preferred silhouettes to determining the look and feel she wanted the outfits to convey.

“Overall, I just wanted the aesthetic to be very classic, very timeless tennis,” she explained. “I feel like Miu Miu is a brand that is catered to Gen Z, and the pieces are very classic but (have a) modern twist to them.

“I feel like that’s what we did for Rome: A lot of the classic tennis lines, but maybe adding the crop top to make it more youthful.”
