Anett Kontaveit may have proven that she is a dark horse contender for the WTA Finals. The ninth seed won her third title in as many months at the Kremlin Cup, coming back from the brink of defeat to oust Ekaterina Alexandrova.

The Estonian had not dropped a set during the tournament, but found herself down a set and two breaks in the final bout. Yet she managed to remain focused on the task at hand, ending the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory. Kontaveit was in pure disbelief saying after the match: “I’m still a little bit speechless...Congratulations to Ekaterina. You played such great tennis today."

Kontaveit previously won the Cleveland Ladies Open in August and the Ostrava Open in September. The 25-year-old is now the only female player, next to Ashleigh Barty and Barbora Krejcikova, to win three or more titles this season.

With her comeback win, Kontaveit still has a chance of being a contender in the WTA Finals. The Estonian must have another outstanding week at the Transylvania Open and hope that Ons Jabeur does not reach the semifinals in Italy.
