Querrey, Collins win Hawaii Open exhibition

The Hawaii Open is known to reel in top players, but this year fans were disappointed to see two of the biggest names pulled out of the event just before it commenced.

Defending champion Kei Nishikori stated he could not compete in this year's edition due to a "nagging elbow injury." Following Nishikori's statement at the tournament's opening press conference, a spokesman stated that Maria Sharapova would not be taking the court due to "unforeseen circumstances."

But although the Japanese world No. 13 didn't compete, he joined Tennis Channel commentators for some of the match play.

Sharapova most recently took the court in Abu Dhabi, posting a straight-set win over Ajla Tomljanovic to capture the Mubadala World Tennis Championship women's exhibition.

Despite the last-minute hit, Taylor Fritz, Sam Querrey and Danielle Collins provided lots of thrills in the single-elimination, three-day event.

Querrey defeated Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 6-7, 13-11 to take the men's title and Collins captured the women's side via withdrawal from Angelique Kerber. The German was unable to compete due to an injury she endured during her warm-up before the match.

Since the women's final didn't take place, a mixed-doubles match was set up instead and the spur-of-the-moment battle did not disappoint.

Christian Harrison and Collins slipped past Querrey and Yanina Wickmayer in a tight three-set decider to finish the tournament on a strong note.
