NEW YORK—Often referenced, never replicated.

Serena Williams made a triumphant return to the 2024 US Open and threw it back to one of her greatest hits, decked out in denim in an apparent homage to the 20th anniversary of her iconic Nike kit.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion has been off the tour since officially evolving away from the game two years ago but has been popping up more and more in the tennis world since giving birth to her second child, Adira River Ohanian, last summer.

Williams was seated on Arthur Ashe Stadium for Day 6 of the 2024 US Open, where Jessica Pegula and Jannik Sinner both advanced on Saturday.

Williams attended the Summer Olympic Games in Paris and posted a Tik Tok showing herself on the tennis court for a light hit.

But nowhere is Williams more at home than the US Open, a tournament she first won as a teenager in 1999 and went on to win a total of six times.

Besides that, Williams made numerous unforgettable fashion statements over her 21 appearances in Flushing Meadows, none more so than the “denim and boots” look she wore in 2004.

“I think of all the outfits I wore, and they say, ‘What was your favorite?’ This is always Top 3,” Williams said of the ensemble in a “Life in Looks” Vogue interview. “I remember telling Nike, ‘I’m switching to you guys from Puma, I wanted more pizzazz.’ And I loved what Andre [Agassi] wore when he wore the jean shorts. I wanted to wear a jean skirt!

“So, we designed this great jean skirt. It was a jean fabric but it was very light because it needed to be able to play and perform.”

In between watching matches on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Serena got to catch up with her fellow former pros including current world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

Here’s hoping Serena’s denim reference revives the trend in 2025.
