The tennis court is like a beacon for any professional player in their prime, calling them back after they’ve been on the sidelines for a while. It can take a lot to get back there, though, and right now, Taylor Townsend and Monica Puig are showing they’re ready to do whatever it takes to make a positive return.

Both of the WTA standouts posted videos on Instagram this week that gave updates on where they are with their respective comebacks.

Townsend hasn’t played a match since last year’s US Open, when she came within a few points of reaching the women’s doubles final with her fellow American, Asia Muhammad. The 25-year-old has had the perfect reason for taking time off as she recently entered the ranks of motherhood. She’s been detailing the experience of being a parent on her Instagram page, but recently gave an update on where she is fitness-wise, with a newfound commitment to nutrition.

“I’ve changed my mindset,” she said. “I’ve accepted the fact that this is part of my process and is necessary for me to get where I want to be.” It’s apparently paying off as the former world No. 61 said she’s recently lost 10 pounds.

Puig, too, made her last appearance on court at a Grand Slam in fall 2020, falling in the first round at the French Open, which came on the heels of an opening-round defeat at the US Open. Plagued by a shoulder problem, she decided to shut down her campaign after Paris and have surgery. Still recovering, Puerto Rico’s first Olympic Gold Medalist was unable to defend her title in Tokyo this summer. Lately, though, Puig’s been sharing videos of her progress as she tries to make her way back to the court.

Working on shoulder stability, as well as her footwork, Puig has been determined over the course of her rehab. The 27-year-old even took time to find a temporary competitive outlet by recently participating in a Spartan obstacle course race.

Playing for the top prizes on the WTA Tour, though, is obviously where Puig wants to be. As she wrote on a recent Instagram post: “Green light from the doc can’t come soon enough!”
