No. 5: “Siuuu!”

There’s nothing like hitting an ace and hearing the massive crowd on Rod Laver Arena descend into cheers and applause. Or, wait, is the crowd actually booing?

During this year’s Australian Open, players were confused, amused and annoyed in equal measure as the crowd’s go-to chant became a celebration straight out of FIFA video games.

We’re talking about ‘Siuuu!’—a reference to soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s signature goal celebration. And it’s also a phrase that was repeated to infinity in Melbourne, as the viral cry is now frequently heard at sports stadiums around the world.

Melbourne Park was no exception, although tennis players were divided on how they felt hearing the chant in between points and during changeovers.

“It was incredibly irritating,” said former world No. 1 Andy Murray, while home favorite Nick Kyrgios begged to differ. The Aussie told press he welcomed the ‘Siuuu’ cries throughout his run to the doubles title.

“They actually weren’t saying ‘boo’. It’s just a stupid [chant],” Kyrgios said. “They were doing some Ronaldo thing. Ronaldo does it every time he scores.

“I thought they were going to do it for like 10 minutes—they did it for two and a half hours. Like every point, I don’t know why. It was a zoo out there.”

"Those who are doing it probably have a low IQ," said Daniil Medvedev, having heard the “disappointing” chant in response to his break points and second serves.

The Russian, who celebrated his 2021 US Open victory with a FIFA-inspired move of his own, eventually warmed up to the chants. He would later sign ‘Siuuuuuu’ on the camera lens en route to the singles final.

“I was like, 'Well, okay, I'm going to write it then because everybody is doing it,'” he explained. “So, I guess that's the thing to do.”

Maybe this upcoming season fans at the Australian Open should just stick to the old “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” instead?
