The shocking news that Roger Federer will call time on his tennis career has many in the sport feeling extra nostalgic, and Somdev Devvarman is no different.

The former world No. 62 went through a personal and very millennial photo album to tell fans the story of his first match against the Swiss Maestro at the 2011 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

“I needed security from the beating I was about to get,” jokes Devvarman, who played his last match on tour in 2016.

As the slide show moves onto the coin toss, Devvarman notes, “This is the last time I had Roger flat-footed.”

Federer went on to win the match 6-3, 6-3, and won the title in Dubai a total of eight times—most recently in 2019.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will make his final ATP appearance at Laver Cup next weekend.
