New Yorkers will soon get a taste of the authentic Wimbledon experience, as one of the All England Club’s biggest fan draws, The Hill, is heading to the city.
For three days, a full recreation of ‘Henman Hill’ will be popping up in Brooklyn Bridge Park, taking over Pier 6 with a giant screen to follow all the tennis action and a setup that offers panoramic views of Lower Manhattan.
There will also be live performances, Wimbledon-inspired gin cocktails and tournament stewards around the grounds for the perfect summertime-in-London atmosphere. And according to Time Out New York, each day’s order of play will conclude with an after-party complete with live DJs.
The Hill—a nickname for Aorangi Terrace—is a spot at the All England Club where crowds of fans without showcourt tickets can gather to watch matches on a giant screen beside Court No. 1. Over the years, it’s taken on the names Henman Hill, Murray Mound, Konta Contour and, most recently, Raducanu Ridge in honor of each generation’s greatest British players.
The fan tradition has even gone digital, as the Virtual Hill made its debut last year amidst COVID-19 restrictions—and now, it’s set to hop across the pond for the first time.
The official AELTC event will run from July 8 through 10—in tennis terms, that’s the men’s semifinals, women’s final and men’s final days—and is completely free to the public. But keep in mind, there’s a 1,000-person cap each day, so tickets must be secured in advance.
