Tsitsidosa and a WTA Big Three? Four storylines for ‘Break Point’ season 2

The 2022 tennis season ended for the second time this week when Break Point premiered the final five episodes of its debut season. With the Netflix docuseries leaving viewers in the aftermath of that year’s ATP and WTA Finals, an entire 2023 is yet to be explored, leaving us to wonder: which storylines from this year will be featured on a second season?

Here are four ideas:

1. Holger Rune’s rise

Rune burst onto the scene in definitive fashion at the very end of 2022, roaring to his first Masters 1000 title with a win over Novak Djokovic. The Rolex Paris Masters ultimately went ignored in the first run of Break Point, but production is clearly looking to correct that mistake with the news that Rune was among the new wave of subjects being filmed during the 2023 Australian Open.

How might Rune contrast with fellow 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz in what would be an easy Next Gen narrative? The fiercely competitive Dane has already delivered his share of memorable moments in 2023, from his grudge match against Stan Wawrinka at the BNP Paribas Open to his two Masters 1000 finals in Monte Carlo and Rome.

Flanked by a team of personalities from on-and-off coach Patrick Mouratoglou to mother Aneke, the world No. 6 would have no shortage of voices to help tell his eminently watchable story.

2. The WTA 'Big 3'

The last two decades have played host to a Golden Age of men’s tennis, but might we be witnessing the start of a similar era on the women’s side.

The three-woman rivalry of Iga Swiatek vs. Aryna Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina has been the story on the women’s tour in 2023, with the talented trio sweeping both Grand Slam tournaments and all but one of the biggest titles.

Both Swiatek and Sabalenka featured heavily in the first season of Break Point, making Rybakina an interesting new character for fans to get to know. The world No. 3 is currently preparing to defend her Wimbledon title; might cameras already be following her?

3. Tsitsidosa

In season 1, Matteo Berrettini and Ajla Tomljanovic delighted Break Point viewers with a look into their lives as a tennis power couple. But after both players went their separate ways as their three-year relationship ended, who would step in to fill the void?

Tennis’ newest mixed doubles duo of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa are ready for the challenge—and they are far from camera shy. The pair hard-launched their relationship with a flurry of videos and clips on social media—complete with their own joint Instagram account “Tsitsidosa”—and they have been posting up a storm ever since.

From Badosa sneaking into Lenglen to watch Tsitsipas’ match at Roland Garros to their luxurious Dubai trip afterward, we just hope Netflix was on hand to capture it all.

4. Rafa’s Farewell

Although he wasn’t directly involved in filming Break Point, Rafael Nadal’s presence featured heavily throughout the first season. While Nadal’s Grand Slam winning ways were a major storyline in part one, part two touched on the retirement of another G.O.A.T. as Serena Williams waved goodbye at the US Open.

In Break Point’s next season, fans can expect to see their favorite players reacting to the news of Nadal’s impending retirement, as well as processing what his absence means for the rest of the field. This will be especially true as the clay-court season approaches, and cameras capture Novak Djokovic’s emotional—and record-breaking—Roland Garros victory.

Nadal has been struggling with a hip injury all year, and as a result he has only competed in two tournaments including the Australian Open—where Break Point kicked off filming for the 2023 pro tennis season.
