10 Things to Know, Day 7: Novak Djokovic is 11-0 against lucky losers

The last spots in the second week are up for grabs today. Five major champions are among the players in action: one man (Novak Djokovic) and four women (Sofia Kenin, Petra Kvitova, Garbine Muguruza and Jelena Ostapenko).

Djokovic has only lost 10 games in his first two rounds. It’s the fewest games he’s ever lost to reach the third round of Roland Garros, and fewest at any major since 2017 Wimbledon.

Djokovic has never lost to a lucky loser. He’s 11-0 against lucky losers at tour-level (not just at majors), which won’t be good news for his opponent, No. 153-ranked Colombian lucky loser Daniel Elahi Galán.

Djokovic will try to pass Roger Federer for second-most career wins for a man at Roland Garros. He tied the Swiss at 70 on Thursday, and he’s going for his 71st today. Rafael Nadal holds the record with 96.

Matteo Berrettini will try to make (even more) history for Italy. If he beats Daniel Altmaier, Italy will have three men in the round of 16 at a major for the first time in the Open Era (Lorenzo Sonego and Jannik Sinner already won).

Roberto Bautista Agut is on a 17-match losing streak against Top 20 players on clay. His last win against a Top 20 player on clay was against No. 15 Fabio Fognini at 2014 Stuttgart. He plays No. 18 Pablo Carreno Busta today.

Patricia Maria Tig is the last mom standing. Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Tsvetana Pironkova all made a splash in New York, but it’s Tig—the fourth mom who started in the draw here—who outlasted them all in Paris.

Fiona Ferro and Tig are both on seven-match winning streaks. Ferro went 5-0 to win Prague in August and Tig went 5-0 to win Istanbul in September—those were their last events. They’re both 2-0 here.

Stefanos Tsitsipas lost his only career meeting against his opponent today. Aljaz Bedene beat a No. 6-ranked Tsitsipas in the second round of the indoor event in Rotterdam in February for his best career win.

Petra Kvitova thrives against fellow lefties. At No. 11, Kvitova is the No. 1 lefty on the WTA rankings, and she’s 45-14 against lefties at tour-level. Her left-handed opponent today, Leylah Fernandez, is 0-1.
