In unfortunate news, Arthur Fils, the top-ranked French player and No. 14 seed at Roland Garros, has withdrawn from the tournament due to injury.

The 20-year-old defeated Jaume Munar in the second round on Thursday, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 2-6, 0-6, 6-4, but said he was experiencing back pain during the match. Upon seeking medical advice, he pulled out of the clay-court Grand Slam late Friday night, Paris time.

Fils has had a breakout season, reaching the quarterfinals at Masters events in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo. He also made the semifinal round in Barcelona.

His previous Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, also ended unexpectedly: with a retirement in the third round against Ugo Humbert.
