It's safe to say that Casper Ruud might not want to see Jordan Thompson across the net from his anytime soon. The 29-year-old Aussie toppled the three-time Grand Slam finalist not once, but twice, on Saturday night in Los Cabos, Mexico to cap a "miracle" week in Mexico and, ultimately, sweep the singles and doubles titles.

Thompson had already dubbed his week a "miracle" in the afternath of his 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(2) semifinal win over No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev, which lasted three hours and 42 minutes and finished after 1 a.m. on Saturday. In the quarterfinals, he was down 6-0, 3-0 (and 4-1, 15-40) against American teenager Alex Michelsen, but saved three match points in an eventual 0-6, 7-6(1), 7-5 win, in which he was also down 5-3 in the decider..

But the lore only grew on finals day, as, in all, Thompson won three matches on Saturday to leave Los Cabos with a pair of trophies, including his first career ATP singles crown.

He first faced much less adversity against three-time Grand Slam finalist Ruud, who dethroned defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals and was contesting his first hard-court final since the 2022 season-ending ATP Finals. Thompson broke Ruud's serve three times, and saved 11 of the 13 break points he faced, in a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory that lasted two hours and two minutes. Though he failed to serve out victory at 6-3, 5-4, he won five of the first seven points of the tiebreak to finish things off.

"I spent so many hours on the court this week. In the quarterfinal I could have been double bageled, I could have been losing 6-0, 6-0. And now I'm about to lift the trophy, so I think it's still a miracle," Thompson said afterwards.

“It’s been a journey. I’m nearly 30 and I’m lifting a trophy; I never thought I would do that.”

Following his singles triumph, Thompson later got the better of the Norwegian for a second time in the doubles semifinals, as he and Purcell beat Ruud and American Will Blumberg 7-6(1), 6-3.

The all-Aussie pair eventually won their second title of the season, and third overall together, by beating Ecuador's Gonzalo Escobar and Kazakhstan's Aleksandr Nedovyesov 7-5, 7-6(2) in 98 minutes.

Thompson is the first man to sweep the singles and doubles titles at the same ATP Tour event since Nick Kyrgios won both trophies in Washington, D.C. in 2022.
