WATCH: Krejcikova began the year with a runner-up finish in Sydney and a maiden quarterfinal at the Australian Open.

World No. 2 Barbora Krejcikova has announced she will withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open.

"I am extremely disappointed and sad to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open,” Krejcikova said in a statement. “I was looking forward to playing in Indian Wells very much but unfortunately I won't be able to do so this year.”

Krejcikova was slated to be the tournament’s top seed following World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty’s announced absence from Indian Wells and Miami. The reigning Roland Garros champion, who was practicing at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Monday, cited an elbow injury for the reason behind her withdrawal.

The Czech has enjoyed a meteoric rise since winning her maiden major singles title in Paris last spring, culminating with a rise to her current career-high ranking after the Middle East swing. Krejcikova began the 2022 season with a runner-up finish at the Sydney International, and reached the Australian Open quarterfinal—bowing out to Paula Badosa and Madison Keys, respectively.

Krejcikova’s withdrawal means that fellow Australian Open quarterfinalist Alizé Cornet will assume her spot in the draw and become the No. 33 seed.
