Ben Shelton vs. Roberto Bautista Agut: Match Preview
It's been a sizzling summer so far for Ben Shelton—he's won 14 of his last 16 matches, a stretch that includes reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, the semifinals in Washington D.C., then winning the biggest title of his career at the Masters 1000 event in Toronto last week.
He's also risen from No. 10 to No. 6 on the ATP rankings in that time, with a spot in the Top 5 within his reach depending on how he does in Cincinnati.
Tonight, the No. 5-seeded Shelton will try to keep his momentum going against Roberto Bautista Agut, who hasn't dropped a set to get to the third round here, including a 6-4, 6-3 upset over No. 32-seeded Cam Norrie in the second round. The Spanish veteran has 22 career wins over Top 10 players, including one at this event, against Daniil Medvedev in 2020 (when it was held in New York).
Shelton has come out on top in straight sets both times he's faced Bautista Agut previously, both of those meetings coming at hard-court majors last year—a 6-2, 7-6 (2), 7-5 win in the first round of the Australian Open and a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory in the second round of the US Open.
