The last time Tomic celebrated a win at the tour level was the 2021 Australian Open, a non-completed victory against Yuichi Sugita that ended with his Japanese opponent retiring late in their third set after splitting the first two. The holder of four ATP titles, Tomic’s ranking dropped to No. 240 when the cutoff for Wimbledon qualifying was made.
The Australian ultimately chose to pursue a main-draw spot in Mallorca over the wait-and-see scenario as an alternate for the qualifying draw at The Championships. A win in the second round could send the former world No. 17 back inside the Top 200.
Tomic next meets an in-form Roberto Bautista Agut, the No. 7 seed. A former Wimbledon semifinalist himself, Bautista Agut fended off Tomas Martin Etcheverry, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
