Camila Giorgi silently walks away after name appears on ITIA's retired players list

Leave it to Camila Giorgi to walk away from tour life without saying a word.

On Tuesday, Giorgi’s name formally appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) retired players list.

Down to No. 116 in the WTA rankings, the Italian notably did not enter Roland Garros before word of her surprising career status broke out. She has not posted about the decision on her social media nor addressed the matter with media as of Wednesday afternoon.

The 32-year-old most recently competed at the Miami Open, winning two games against world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in a second-round defeat. Giorgi has contested five events in 2024, going 3-5.

By declaring herself retired, Giorgi will need to make herself available for out-of-competition testing for at least six months if she has any change of heart down the road.

A native of Macerata, Giorgi is a four-time winner on the WTA Tour. She lifted her first trophy in 2015 at Rosmalen (grass) and later celebrated her biggest success when she defeated Karolina Pliskova to win 2021 Montreal—a 1000-level tournament.

On the Grand Slam stage, Giorgi’s best result was a quarterfinal run at 2018 Wimbledon. She also reached the round of 16 at the US Open (2013) and Roland Garros (2022) to go with five third-round showings at the Australian Open.
