Carlos Alcaraz reignited the battle for ATP world No. 1 on Tuesday by winning his opening round at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, defeating Otto Virtanen, 6-4, 6-2.

Alcaraz lost the No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner following a runner-up finish to the Italian at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, but the Spaniard could regain the top spot by winning a third title in Barcelona. The top seed at his home tournament, the 22-year-old looked strong in his first hurdle towards that goal, defeating the Finnish qualifier in under 90 minutes on Pista Rafa Nadal.

Alcaraz first claimed the No. 1 ranking after winning the 2022 US Open and held the ranking for 30 of the last 31 weeks—dating back to his second US Open victory last September. Sinner, himself a former No. 1, is currently on a 17-match winning streak after winning three consecutive ATP Masters 1000 titles at the BNP Paribas Open, Miami Open, and now Monte Carlo, which he won for the first time.

Carlos Alcaraz kicks off quest for third Barcelona title vs. Virtanen

Sinner is sitting out the ATP 500 in Barcelona, allowing Alcaraz the opportunity to make up a 440-point gap in the rankings by going one win better than his 2025 runner-up finish to Holger Rune.

Alcaraz was circumspect about possibly losing No. 1 to Sinner last week, speaking on court after a win in Monte Carlo.

"I'm defending a bunch of points that's going to be really difficult to defend them all, and even if I defend them, Jannik is going to add some points at these tournaments that he didn't have to defend," he said. "So, I will try to play my best and let's see what happens.

"Of course, for me, the No. 1 is not in my mind right now. I'm just trying to feel the best was as I can on the clay court and let's see what's going to be on the clay swing."

Alcaraz, who became the youngest man to complete the Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open earlier this year, will next face Tomas Machac for a spot in the quarterfinals.

No. 2 seed Lorenzo Musetti won tough first set against Martin Landaluce before ultimately defeating the Spaniard, 7-5, 6-2, while No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur navigated a first-set tiebreaker against Sebastian Ofner en route to a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win. No. 4 seed Karen Khachanov was unable to complete the sweep of top seeds when he fell to Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli, 6-3, 6-4.
