WATCH: Alcaraz retired in the second set of his quarterfinal against Rune after seeking medical treament earlier in the match.

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz announced on Saturday that he will be forced to miss both the ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals as a result of an oblique muscle tear in his left abdominal.

“It is tough and painful for me to miss these two events, which are so important to me, but all I can do is be positive and focus on my recovery,” Alcaraz wrote on social media. “Thank you for the support!”

Alcaraz has been the story of the 2022 season since beginning the year ranked outside the Top 30, reaching seven finals and winning five total ATP titles. The Spanish teenager, who turned 19 this year, claimed Masters victories in both Miami and Madrid with wins over Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and went on to not only his first Grand Slam title but also become the youngest ATP No. 1 in history at the US Open.

He retired from his Rolex Paris Masters quarterfinal against Holger Rune, trailing his fellow teen, 3-6, 6-6 and 1-3 in the second-set tiebreaker.

Alcaraz’s withdrawal from the ATP Finals means that American Taylor Fritz will be the eighth man in Turin, with Hubert Hurkacz and Rune serving as alternates.

Rune could become first alternate should he win the title in Paris on Sunday.
