Coco Gauff vs. Jasmine Paolini: Match Preview
After winning Roland Garros, Gauff had a difficult few tournaments—but she’s starting to gather steam again, and perhaps just at the right time, as she’s through to her first quarterfinal of the summer here in Cincinnati, with the US Open right around the corner.
Standing between the world No. 2 and the semifinals will be one of the toughest competitors out there in Paolini, who hasn’t dropped a set to reach the quarterfinals here, including a pair of wins over former Top 3 players Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova.
The two are tied in their head-to-head, 2-2, which includes a 6-3, 6-2 victory for Gauff in the exact same round here in 2023, when she went on to win the title (and then the US Open). But Paolini has won both of their previous meetings this year, both on clay and both in straight sets, a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of Stuttgart and a 6-4, 6-2 win in the final of Rome. Both of Gauff’s wins, meanwhile, came on hard courts.
