Daniil Medvedev announces split from coach Gilles Cervara after dramatic US Open exit

NEW YORK—Daniil Medvedev announced on social media Sunday that his nearly decade-long relationship with coach Gilles Cervara had ended following the 2025 US Open.

“Amazing 8-10 years together,” the former world No. 1 wrote, “20 titles, world number 1 but most importantly a lot of fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever. I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future.”

Under Cervara, Medvedev topped the ATP rankings and reached six Grand Slam finals, winning one at the 2021 US Open to prevent Novak Djokovic from clinching the Calendar Year Grand Slam.

The 29-year-old has struggled mightily at major tournaments since the 2024 Australian Open, where he fell in the final to Jannik Sinner from two sets up. In four major appearances in 2025, Medvedev won just one match, and suffered three consecutive first-round losses.

At the US Open, he took a second straight Grand Slam defeat to Benjamin Bonzi, who also defeated him two months ago at the Wimbledon Championships. It was during their match on Louis Armstrong Stadium that Medvedev incurred a $42,500 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct for berating umpire Greg Allensworth and delaying play for over six minutes as Bonzi served for the match. Medvedev ultimately lost in five sets and will drop further down the rankings after starting the year at No. 5.

Medvedev has not yet announced a new coach, but fitness trainer Eric Hernandez also announced he had split with Medvedev.

"What a journey!" Hernandez wrote. "I met you in 2014, and during these 11 years, we have in common many wonderful experiences and moments in and off court. It will remain etched in my memory forever.

"Working with you has been a true joy, through both the highs and the lows. I tried to push you at your best, I put all my skills to bringing out the best in you and helping you make the most of what you could achieve.
