Dominic Thiem parts with coach Nicolas Massu, salutes ‘incredible journey’ on social media

WATCH: Thiem is coming off a quarterfinal finish on clay in Estoril, but endured back-to-back first-round defeats in Indian Wells and Miami last month.

Dominic Thiem bid farewell to longtime coach Nicolas Massu, making the announcement on social media Sunday.

“What an incredible journey...” wrote the 2020 US Open champion. “It all started in early 2019 - you came along with your incredible energy and extreme love for the sport.”

Massu, a former Olympic gold medalist, catalyzed Thiem’s ascent to the top of men’s tennis, presiding over his first Masters 1000 victory at the 2019 BNP Paribas Open and his first Grand Slam victory in Flushing Meadows 18 months later.

In between, Thiem reached two other major finals at Roland Garros, the Australian Open, and finished runner-up at back-to-back Nitto ATP Finals in 2019 and 2020.

“I think that shows we're an incredible team,” wrote the Austrian, who has struggled with injuries since 2021.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this incredible and beautiful time Nico. I wish you only the best and our friendship will last forever.”

The pair have continued working together as Thiem has struggled to get back into form, having dealt with knee and wrist issues in the last two years. From a career-high ranking of No. 3 in March 2020, the 29-year-old is currently ranked No. 111.

Thiem has announced no further additions to his team.
