Elena Rybakina vs. Dayana Yastremska: Match Preview

Rybakina, 26, and Yastremska, 25, have been on tour together for quite a few years, but their first meeting didn’t take place until January of 2025, at the Australian Open. Rybakina prevailed 6-3, 6-4.

Since then, both women have had solid seasons, though that means different things for each of them.

HIGHLIGHTS: Elena Rybakina secures Jaqueline Cristian victory | Montréal 3R

Yastremska’s 30-16 record, No. 35 ranking, two runner-up finishes, and win over Coco Gauff at Wimbledon qualify as promising. Rybakina’s 35-14 record, and No. 12 ranking, while superior to Yastremska’s, qualify as something of a disappointment from a Wimbledon champion and former fixture of the Top 5.

One thing we know: Their match won’t offer a contrast in styles. Each of these tall, thin women likes to hammer the ball as soon and as hard as possible. That’s especially true for Yastremska, who plays most of her matches in fifth gear.

Rybakina has long been the better player. She’s has a stronger serve, and she’s not as streaky or prone to error-riddled performances from the ground. Which makes this an interesting test for Yastremska. She has improved, but has she improved enough to beat this opponent? I’ll say…not quite. Winner: Rybakina
