Elena Rybakina vs. Marta Kostyuk: Match Preview

Each of these women is looking to put a jolt into a somewhat stagnant season.

Rybakina has a good record overall—36-14—but she has just one title, hasn’t made the quarters at a major, and is out of the Top 10 for the first time in three years. Kostyuk has had it worse. After showing improvement in 2024, her rise has stalled; she’s just 20-16 on the year, and is down form No. 16 to No. 28.

But they’ve given themselves a chance for something better in Montreal. In their round of 16 matches, both lost close firsts to fairly in-form opponents—Dayana Yastremska in Rybakina’s case, McCartney Kessler in Kostyuk’s—before coming back to win. Kostyuk, in fact, has gone the distance in all three of her wins, so she shouldn’t be fazed if she falls behind again.

These two have played three times, and Rybakina has won two of those matches, including the most recent, in 2024. She also made the semis in Montreal in 2023, and has the more powerful game and penetrating strokes. She’ll be able to get in the first strike most of the time, and the match will likely be on her racquet. Kostyuk will surely scrap to the end, but Rybakina has the weapons to make it a futile effort.

According to Rybakina, Kostyuk won’t go down without a fight, or a grunt.

“It’s always a tough battle,” she says of their encounters. “They’re noisy matches, that’s for sure.” Winner: Rybakina
