WATCH: Mertens reached the fourth round of Roland Garros earlier this season.

Elise Mertens has appointed Philippe Dehaes as her new coach, having had no coach since she split with Simon Goffin a month ago.

The 26-year-old from Belgium is known for her consistent play but has been having a tough season and is currently No.33 in the rankings. Still, the coaching partnership could be paying off, since she's through to the third round of the Western & Southern Open this week.

"Elise asked me to help her a little until the season finishes," Dehaes told dh sports. "If everything goes fine, a collaboration next year is envisaged. The first assessment will be following the US Open."

Dehaes is an experienced WTA coach, having worked with numerous tour players such as Daria Kasatkina and Monica Puig.

Mertens has reached a career-high No.12 in singles and No.1 in doubles.
